Maharashtra is bracing for a prolonged Maratha quota stir as Manoj Jarange Patil commenced an indefinite protest at Azad Maidan, accompanied by thousands of supporters, demanding the inclusion of the Maratha community into the OBC category. Jarange Patil has vowed not to leave Mumbai until his demand is fulfilled, stating his readiness to face any consequences.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated his confidence in resolving the Maratha community's demands through amicable dialogue. He confirmed that a cabinet subcommittee, empowered to make cabinet-level decisions, has been established to engage with the protestors. Despite this, Fadnavis rejected the demand for Maratha inclusion in the OBC category, instead advocating for the community to accept benefits under SEBC and EWS. He underscored the government's commitment to safeguarding the state's social fabric and preventing conflict between Maratha and OBC communities.
The Chief Minister also cautioned other political parties against exploiting the situation for political gain. While the Bombay High Court initially granted one day for the protest, Jarange Patil is seeking an extension, which authorities are reportedly reviewing positively in adherence to court directives. The renewed protests have already led to a blame game between the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi.
