The auspicious occasion of Mahalaya was celebrated across India today, marking the end of Pitra Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha, which heralds the arrival of Durga Puja. For millions of Bengalis, the day began at 4 AM with the traditional radio broadcast of Mahishasura Mardini, a captivating collection of devotional songs and recitations that has been a part of the celebration for decades .In Kolkata and across West Bengal, thousands of devotees gathered at riverbanks, especially along the Hooghly River near Dakshineswar, to perform Tarpan. This sacred ritual involves offering water and prayers to honor ancestors and seek their blessings. The atmosphere was filled with chants and devotion as people welcomed the spirit of Durga Puja.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his warm wishes on the occasion through a post on social media. He wrote, “Wishing everyone a blessed Mahalaya. As the sacred days of Durga Puja draw closer, may our lives be filled with light, purpose, and Maa Durga’s divine blessings.
