Lok Sabha passes National Sports Governance Bill

The Lok Sabha has approved the National Sports Governance Bill, a key legislation aimed at reforming administration in India’s sports sector. The bill proposes structural changes, notably the phased replacement of existing sports bodies with newly formed decision-making bodies that feature independent and athlete representation.

Under the new law, each national sports federation must establish a National Sports Club Organization (NSCO) and a Board of Arbitration in Sports (BOAS) within eight months. These bodies are designed to ensure better governance, transparency, and streamlined dispute resolution. If federations fail to comply, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will assume control. The legislation also mandates reforms in elections and administration, moving away from entrenched leadership models.

Proponents argued that the bill addresses long-standing governance issues in Indian sports, including lack of accountability and outdated structures. Critics, however, raised concerns over state intervention and questioned whether the changes would truly empower athletes. After intense discussions in both chambers, the bill has now received Lok Sabha approval and will move to the Rajya Sabha for the next step in the legislative process.

This reform marks a significant shift in how national sports organizations operate, with a clear focus on modernizing governance and involving stakeholders in decision-making.
