Lok Sabha Erupts Over Anti-Paper Leak Bill

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - The Lok Sabha witnessed high drama on Wednesday as a heated debate on the Anti-Paper Leak Bill turned into a political confrontation after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that pellet guns were used against protesting students on the orders of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi's remarks triggered sharp protests from NDA MPs, who demanded an apology and accused him of making baseless allegations. Gandhi maintained that such use of force could only be authorised by the Home Minister, leading to repeated disruptions and adjournments of the House. After proceedings resumed, the Lok Sabha passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 through a voice vote.

During the debate, Union Minister Jitendra Singh described the legislation as a landmark step to protect the integrity of public examinations and safeguard students' interests. The Opposition, however, termed the amendments inadequate, with Congress leaders arguing that repeated paper leaks proved the earlier law had failed and calling for broader reforms in the education system.

While the government projected the bill as a major reform to curb examination malpractices, the Opposition questioned its effectiveness, ensuring that the issue of paper leaks and student protests remained at the centre of Parliament's debate.
