Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - As election-related restrictions come into force in West Bengal, including a temporary ban on liquor sales, a new concern is emerging on the ground—the rise of an illegal black market. While the move aims to ensure free and fair polling, reports suggest that unauthorized liquor trade is quietly gaining momentum.
With licensed liquor shops remaining shut during the election period, demand has shifted to illegal channels. Sources indicate that unregulated vendors are selling alcohol at significantly higher prices, often without any quality checks. Premium liquor such as Scotch is being sold at nearly 50% above retail rates, while lower- end whiskey, vodka and rum are fetching almost their double their usual prices. This has led to a surge in underground networks operating in both urban and rural pockets. Enforcement agencies have stepped up vigilance, conducting raids and seizing illegal stock from several locations. Officials say strict action is being taken against those involved in bootlegging and unauthorized distribution. However, controlling the spread of such activities remains a challenge due to high demand and quick movement of illegal supplies. Experts warn that liquor sold through black markets can be unsafe, as it may not meet safety standards. Apart from posing serious health risks, the illegal trade also results in revenue losses and raises law-and-order concerns during a sensitive election period.
While the liquor ban during elections is intended to maintain discipline and fairness, its unintended consequence—the rise of a black market—has become a growing issue in West Bengal. Authorities continue to appeal to the public to avoid illegal purchases and support efforts to ensure a safe and fair electoral process.
