For nearly a decade, the two football icons dominated world football, breaking records, winning trophies and dividing fans in the never-ending G.O.A.T debate. Now, Messi has reflected on the iconic rivalry, describing it as “beautiful” and insisting that it never went beyond sports.

In an interview on Lo Del Pollo, Messi opened up about the intense competition he shared with Ronaldo during their legendary years at FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. The Argentine superstar said comparisons between them became inevitable because they were competing for every major title and individual honour. “Those comparisons or competitions are something natural in the world of soccer. It’s normal, just like it happens with clubs or national teams, but it was never anything beyond sports,” Messi said.
 

Messi explained that the rivalry grew even bigger because of the extraordinary success both players achieved during their peak years. While Messi became La Liga’s all-time highest scorer with 474 goals, Ronaldo established himself as the UEFA Champions League’s leading scorer with 140 goals. Between 2008 and 2017, the duo also dominated the Ballon d’Or awards, with Messi winning eight titles and Ronaldo claiming five. The Argentina captain also dismissed any suggestion of personal animosity between the two legends. 

According to Messi, although they rarely met outside matches and award ceremonies, they always shared mutual respect and maintained good relations. “We didn’t meet often except during matches or award ceremonies, where everyone was always watching to see whether he or I would win. But we were always on good terms. What happened was a beautiful sporting rivalry,” he added. Currently, Messi represents Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, while Ronaldo continues his career with Al Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia.

Even as both legends move towards the final phase of their careers, the debate surrounding Messi and Ronaldo continues to capture the imagination of football fans worldwide. However, Messi’s latest remarks offer a more human perspective on the rivalry — one built not on hostility, but on mutual respect and greatness. Football fans may even witness one final showdown between the two icons if Argentina and Portugal meet during the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.
