Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Friday turned turbulent for residents of Leh, Ladakh, as the region experienced not one but two earthquakes within the span of just over 90 minutes the second and stronger registering a magnitude of 4.7. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, scientists are announcing a breakthrough that could fundamentally change how humanity tracks and responds to tsunamis, a satellite has captured, for the first time, the full structural anatomy of a tsunami in motion. The stories of ground trembling and ocean surging have never felt more connected.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) logged a 3.9-magnitude earthquake at 8:31 AM IST on Friday, originating 10 km deep near Leh, Ladakh. Just under two hours later, at 10:10 AM IST, a stronger 4.7 magnitude jolt hit the same area at 28 km depth, both classified as shallow (0-70 km) by USGS, known for intense surface shaking. In parallel tsunami breakthroughs, the NASA-CNES SWOT satellite captured a full wave profile including decades theorized trailing waves within 70 minutes of the July 29, 2025, 8.8-magnitude Kamchatka quake. Its broad scan 2D sea surface maps reveal wave shapes, directions, and spacing far beyond traditional sensors' limits. "I believe SWOT represents a new lens for observing and studying tsunamis and their generation," said Ignacio Sepúlveda, coastal engineering professor at San Diego State University and lead Science study author.
Friday's twin earthquakes in Ladakh and the SWOT satellite findings together tell the same story, the Earth is perpetually in motion, and science is finally developing tools to watch it in real time. The question is no longer whether the next great earthquake will come it is whether humanity will be watching closely enough when it does.
