Kumaraswamy Criticizes Kharge Over Comment to Distressed Farmer

Former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy strongly criticized Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge after a remark made to a distressed farmer triggered political backlash. The controversy began when Kharge, while speaking to a farmer who complained about losing four acres of land, reportedly compared it to his own loss of 40 acres. The comment drew sharp reactions from opposition leaders, who accused him of being insensitive to farmers’ struggles.

Kumaraswamy said such statements were unacceptable at a time when farmers in Karnataka are facing severe difficulties due to erratic monsoons and mounting debts. He argued that leaders must show empathy rather than draw personal comparisons. “It is not about who lost more land, it is about understanding the pain of farmers who are struggling to survive,” he stated.

The Janata Dal (Secular) leader further claimed that the Congress government in Karnataka has failed to deliver adequate relief measures despite repeated appeals from farmers. He added that Kharge’s remark only worsened the perception that politicians are disconnected from ground realities.

Meanwhile, Congress members defended Kharge, saying his words were being taken out of context. According to party sources, Kharge intended to express solidarity by sharing his own hardships but it was interpreted differently.

Political observers note that the exchange highlights growing tensions between the ruling Congress and opposition parties, especially with the issue of farmer welfare becoming central ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
