Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - Kolkata's iconic tram is back in the spotlight. As the city celebrates more than 153 years of its historic tram network, a specially decorated heritage tram rolled through the streets on Thursday, blending nostalgia with a renewed vision for a greener and modern future.
Kolkata celebrated more than 153 years of its iconic tram service with a special Tram Yatra from Gariahat to Shyambazar on Thursday. Organised by filmmaker Mahadeb Shi along with the Calcutta Tram Users Association and Placemaking India, the heritage ride featured a tram decorated with eco-friendly materials. Passengers also received souvenir tickets carrying messages about protecting the Sunderbans mangrove forests.
The celebration comes as the state government plans to revive Kolkata's tram network with modern battery-powered, air-conditioned trams and new routes connecting Rajarhat, New Town and Salt Lake. A proposed heritage corridor between Dakshineswar and Kalighat aims to preserve the city's historic identity while promoting sustainable public transport.
More than just a mode of transport, Kolkata's tram continues to represent the city's history, culture and resilience. With ambitious revival plans underway, the beloved tram may soon begin a new journey into the future while keeping its rich legacy alive.
