Kolkata is reeling under intense rainfall that began overnight, leaving large swathes of the city inundated with waist- and knee-deep water. According to the India Meteorological Department, North Kolkata recorded 200 mm of rain, while South Kolkata saw 180 mm. The persistent deluge has disrupted daily life, especially as the city gears up for the Durga Puja festivities.
Tragically, four people — Firoz Ali Khan of Beniapukur, Pranatosh Kundu of Netaji Nagar, Mumtaz Bibi of Ekbalpur, and one unnamed individual in Gariahat — died from electrocution owing to widespread waterlogging. The Metro Railway Blue Line, which runs between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram, has been partially suspended. Services between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations are disrupted, with truncated operations currently running between Dakshineswar and Maidan. Staff are working to pump out water and restore full service.
Traffic has come to a standstill at major junctions such as Park Circus, Gariahat, Behala, and College Street, with EM Bypass, AJC Bose Road, and Central Avenue also badly affected. Many smaller lanes are impassable. Airlines including IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued advisories, warning passengers of possible delays or diversions due to the severe weather.
