Ananya Lohia , Chennai - Football fever has gripped Kerala as the state government declared a holiday for all schools under the General Education Department on Monday, allowing students to stay up and watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
The decision came after students requested a holiday to watch the blockbuster final between defending champions Argentina and European champions Spain, scheduled to kick off at 12:30 am IST on Monday. General Education Minister N. Samsudheen announced the holiday on social media, while leaders across party lines, including former Education Minister V. Sivankutty, also supported the move.
The World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium will not only feature Lionel Messi's Argentina taking on an unbeaten Spain but will also include the tournament's first-ever Super Bowl-style halftime show. Performances by global stars including Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy and Coldplay are expected, while US President Donald Trump is likely to attend the trophy presentation.
With football passion reaching its peak, Kerala's unique decision reflects the state's deep love for the sport as millions of fans prepare for one of the biggest nights in world football.
