Desk Correspondent , Kolkata – Two groups got involved in the clash during a Ram Navami. Stone-pelting, vandalism, looting and arson were instigated over disruption regarding a music. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, March 27, Raghunathganj and nearby areas in Murshidabad district, West Bengal. One party objects to loud music during the procession. Argument soon escalated into mob violence, police force had to intervene and control the situation.
On March 27 a large procession was heading towards Mackenzie Park in Raghunathganj, Murshidabad. In the Sisatala locality, an argument breakdown between the procession and the locals. Reports suggest it was over loud music from a DJ sound system by the procession. Soon the argument escalated into violence. Both groups started throwing stones at each-other. Several shops were vandalized and even set on fire this further provoked the situation. Police soon came to the scene in large number to stop any further aggravation of the situation. Security was later tightened in Jangipur and Raghunathganj.
Authorities imposed prohibitory orders under the Section 144 across Raghunathganj and parts of Jangipur, banning assembly of four or more people. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dhananjay Ghosh alleged that the violence was “pre-planned” and wants strict actions. Jangipur Municipality chairman Mofizul Islam urged action against those responsible and called for peace. The reason behind the allegations is that incident occurred in poll-bound West Bengal just a month before the assembly elections, and the atmosphere in the area remained tense but under control with heavy security.
