Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Iran has warned of “unforeseen” consequences after what it says was a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. Tehran called the strike illegal and unjustified, and said it would not go unanswered.

Iran’s foreign ministry said the attack caused the vessel to explode, killing one sailor and injuring several others. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the move was a dangerous act of adventurism, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the incident “cannot go unanswered” after speaking with EU and Russian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea against vessels transporting military cargo involving Iran. Tehran has rejected that justification and says it is considering its response, raising concerns that the fallout could widen tensions beyond the Ukraine war alone.

The episode has added a new layer of tension between Tehran and Kyiv, with Iran signaling that retaliation remains possible. For now, the key issue is whether this remains a diplomatic dispute or develops into a broader security confrontation.
