Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Iran has rejected Oman’s proposal for joint management of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the plan does not meet its security concerns and has “no chance of success.” Tehran is instead pushing for a setup that would give it greater oversight over the strategic waterway.

Under Oman’s idea, the two countries would jointly manage shipping lanes through the strait, with voluntary transit fees helping support navigation and maritime safety. But Iranian officials say they want one route to lie entirely inside Iran’s territorial waters and part of the other route to also pass through Iranian waters, allowing Tehran to effectively monitor both inbound and outbound traffic. The dispute matters because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, and any change in control or access can affect global shipping and oil markets. Iran has also suggested that outside pressure from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is shaping Oman’s proposal, which Tehran rejects as unrealistic.

The gap remains wide: Oman wants shared management, while Iran wants much tighter control. That makes a diplomatic breakthrough harder, even as the strait remains central to regional security and global trade.
