Desk Correspondent , Tehran - An Iranian strike has damaged Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure in Bahrain, highlighting how the escalating Middle East conflict is now spilling over into critical digital and cloud computing facilities. The attack hit the headquarters campus of Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) in Hamala, a key telecom hub that hosts Amazon’s cloud operations in the country, according to reports citing the Financial Times and multiple global outlets. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry confirmed that civil defence teams were extinguishing a fire at a company facility following what it described as an Iranian attack, without naming the firm initially.
Amazon’s cloud computing operations in Bahrain suffered physical damage from the strike, causing disruptions to AWS services in the region. The Bahrain facility is part of AWS’s Middle East regions, which serve financial institutions, fintech platforms, logistics apps, and government systems across the Gulf, meaning even partial outages can ripple through banking, payments, and enterprise software workflows. In earlier related strikes, two AWS data centers in the United Arab Emirates were also directly hit by Iranian drones, prompting Amazon to waive an entire month of AWS charges for affected customers as a goodwill and recovery measure. The targeting of an AWS site in Bahrain is widely seen as a deliberate escalation, coming after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards publicly warned that they would strike major US technology firms including Amazon, Google, Apple, and Meta if Iranian leaders were killed in what they called “targeted assassinations”.
Analysts note that attacking cloud infrastructure blurs the line between traditional military sites and private digital assets, raising concerns about the vulnerability of the global “cloud” ecosystem to regional wars. The incident also underscores the Gulf’s role as a key digital infrastructure corridor for the US linked tech sector, with militaries and intelligence agencies increasingly reliant on commercial cloud platforms whose physical locations can now become targets in geopolitical conflicts.
