IPL 2026 fallout: Pant, Axar and Rahane likely to lose captaincy after disastrous campaigns

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - The disastrous IPL 2026 campaign could trigger a major captaincy overhaul across multiple franchises. According to reports, three reputed IPL teams are seriously considering removing their captains after underwhelming performances and failure to stay alive in the playoff race.

Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane and Lucknow Super Giants leader Rishabh Pant are reportedly under pressure following their teams’ poor performances this season. A PTI report claimed that franchise managements are unhappy with the lack of consistency, questionable tactical decisions and inability to guide their sides into the playoffs. LSG became the first team to be officially knocked out of the tournament under Pant’s leadership. Despite entering the season with high expectations, the wicketkeeper-batter struggled for consistency with the bat and failed to inspire the team during crunch situations. Reports suggest franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka is far from pleased with the campaign.

Delhi Capitals are also expected to rethink Axar Patel’s role as captain after another disappointing season. Axar failed to make a strong impact with the bat while critics questioned several on-field decisions during key matches. With changes expected in the franchise’s management structure next year, a new captaincy option is reportedly being explored.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders endured a forgettable season under Ajinkya Rahane. KKR’s conservative batting approach and inconsistent performances reportedly frustrated the management, leading to speculation over Rahane’s future with the side.

While franchises are yet to make any official announcement, reports indicate that IPL 2026 could mark the end of captaincy stints for Axar Patel, Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant. With teams expected to undergo major rebuilding ahead of next season, significant leadership changes may soon become a reality.
