India’s First LNG Carrier Disha Reaches Gujarat After Crossing Hormuz
News Desk - India’s first LNG carrier, Disha, has reached Dahej port in Gujarat after crossing the Strait of Hormuz, marking an important moment for the country’s energy supply chain. The vessel carried 62,370 metric tonnes of LNG from Qatar, and its safe arrival comes as shipping through the critical waterway shows signs of resuming after recent disruption.
The Maltese-flagged carrier docked at Petronet LNG’s Dahej terminal on June 18, with the news widely reported on June 19. Coverage says Disha became the first Indian LNG carrier to transit the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict in the region intensified earlier this year.
The crossing matters because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. Any disruption there can quickly affect global LNG and oil markets, especially for countries like India that depend on imported gas for power generation, industry, and city gas distribution.
For India, Disha’s arrival provides some reassurance at a time when energy logistics have been under pressure. A successful LNG delivery through Hormuz helps reduce immediate supply concerns and signals that crucial maritime routes may be stabilizing.
Disha’s arrival at Dahej is more than a routine cargo delivery; it is a symbol of tentative recovery in a tense regional environment. While the shipment points to improving conditions for LNG transport, the wider geopolitical situation remains uncertain, so the long-term outlook for both shipping and diplomacy is still fragile.
