Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - An Indian-origin doctor has been sentenced in the US after secretly recording hospital staff in a restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio. The case began when a hidden cellphone was found in a unisex restroom in June 2025.

The doctor, identified as Advait Deshmukh, was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo. Court records show he pleaded guilty to attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism, after investigators found more than 80 images on the phone taken between February and May 2025. He was sentenced to six months in prison and three years of probation, along with other conditions including sex-offender registration for 15 years and treatment requirements. Investigators said six victims were identified, and none had consented to being recorded.

The case has drawn attention because it involved a doctor in a trusted medical setting and exposed a serious breach of privacy. The sentencing brings the criminal case to a close, but the incident is likely to remain a cautionary example of abuse of access in healthcare spaces.
