India-Vietnam BrahMos Agreement Signals Stronger Strategic Partnership in the Indo-Pacific

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - India has officially confirmed a defence agreement with Vietnam for the supply of the BrahMos missile system, strengthening military cooperation between the two nations amid increasing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. The deal is being viewed as a major milestone in India’s defence export ambitions and its expanding security partnerships across Southeast Asia.

The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is one of the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missile systems and is capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms. According to officials the agreement reflects deepening defence and strategic ties between New Delhi and Hanoi, with both countries increasingly focusing on maritime security, regional stability, and military modernization. While financial details and delivery timelines have not been publicly disclosed, the deal is expected to significantly enhance Vietnam’s defence capabilities.

Strategic analysts view the agreement as part of India’s broader effort to strengthen partnerships with countries in the Indo-Pacific amid rising geopolitical competition in the South China Sea. The deal also reinforces India’s push to become a major global defence exporter under its domestic manufacturing and self-reliance initiatives. Vietnam has emerged as one of India’s key regional partners, with cooperation expanding across defence, trade, energy, and maritime sectors in recent years.

The BrahMos agreement marks another important step in India-Vietnam relations. As defence cooperation continues to expand, the deal is expected to further strengthen strategic coordination between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
