India has expressed concern over the deaths of five journalists in Gaza after an Israeli airstrike hit Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the incident as “shocking and deeply regrettable.”
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India consistently opposes civilian casualties in conflict zones, particularly when members of the press are affected. He added that New Delhi has taken note of the investigation initiated by Israeli authorities into the hospital strike.
The attack killed journalists working with international media organisations including Reuters, the Associated Press, Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye. The airstrike, which also injured several civilians, has been widely condemned by global organisations and press bodies.
India reaffirmed its stand on the protection of civilians and journalists under international humanitarian law. The MEA also underlined the importance of upholding press freedom during conflicts.
The response comes amid growing international criticism of Israel’s repeated airstrikes in Gaza, particularly those targeting hospitals and civilian infrastructure. Reports indicate the incident followed a “double-strike” pattern, in which rescuers arriving after the first hit were caught in a subsequent strike.
India’s statement aligns with its broader diplomatic stance of urging restraint, respect for humanitarian principles, and accountability through transparent investigations.
This marks one of the strongest public reactions by New Delhi in recent months regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
