Swapna Kumbar, Bengaluru - India has summoned Iran’s senior-most diplomat in New Delhi after an Indian sailor was killed in an attack in the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of External Affairs said. The summons came amid rising concern over repeated attacks on merchant vessels in the vital shipping corridor.

According to reports, India conveyed its “deep concern” over the incident and pressed Tehran to ensure the safety of merchant shipping and mariners passing through the strait. The Indian government also objected strongly to the firing incident that forced Indian-flagged vessels to change course. In earlier accounts of similar incidents, India had urged Iran to restore secure passage for commercial ships and to clarify what had happened.
