India Shields Consumers from Energy Shocks Despite Hormuz Closure

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Friday, May 1, 2026, that India has successfully maintained stable energy supplies despite the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, Puri emphasized that the government’s strategic interventions have effectively shielded domestic consumers from the massive price shocks currently destabilizing global energy markets.

The Minister highlighted that the total disruption of the world’s most vital oil transit point—through which a fifth of global liquid consumption typically passes—had threatened to cripple the national economy. However, through diversified sourcing, increased domestic production, and strategic petroleum reserves, India has managed to avoid the fuel shortages and hyperinflation seen in other importing nations over the past months.

Puri concluded by reiterating the government's commitment to energy security, noting that long-term contracts and diplomatic outreach have been instrumental in navigating the crisis. He assured the public that fuel prices would remain regulated to prevent economic distress, even as international volatility continues to persist due to the maritime blockade.
