Desk Correspondent , New Delhi — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has asserted that Africa now occupies a "central place" in India’s foreign policy, highlighting a significant shift in New Delhi’s geopolitical priorities. Speaking at an event on Thursday, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s engagement with the African continent is no longer just a series of bilateral interactions but a comprehensive partnership rooted in mutual growth, historical ties, and shared aspirations for a more equitable global order. This strategic refocusing comes as India seeks to strengthen its role as a voice for the Global South, ensuring that African interests are integrated into major international forums like the G20.
The Minister detailed the multi-dimensional nature of this relationship, which spans economic cooperation, digital transformation, and healthcare security. He noted that India’s approach is defined by "non-reciprocal" support, focusing on capacity building and infrastructure development through initiatives like the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program and various lines of credit. By sharing its own development experiences—particularly in digital public infrastructure and affordable medicine—India aims to empower African nations to meet their specific national goals without the burden of unsustainable debt, a subtle contrast to the lending practices of other global powers.
The growing synergy between the two regions is underscored by a surge in high-level diplomatic visits and expanding trade volumes, which have reached nearly $100 billion. Jaishankar concluded that the "rebound" of Africa is essential for a rebalanced global economy, and India remains committed to being a reliable partner in this transition. This renewed focus is expected to manifest in further collaborative projects in green energy, maritime security in the Indian Ocean, and a collective push for the reform of the United Nations Security Council, where both India and Africa seek permanent representation.
