Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - India has launched Operation Amistad, a humanitarian relief mission for earthquake-hit Venezuela, sending two Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft with emergency assistance, medical supplies and a field hospital unit. The move comes after devastating twin earthquakes in northern Venezuela killed at least 235 people and injured more than 4,300, with the toll expected to rise as rescue work continues.
According to the reports, the relief package includes an Indian Army field hospital unit, more than 35 tonnes of aid, medicines, medical equipment and two BHISHM Cubes to support emergency treatment and post-disaster care. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said two IAF C-17 aircraft had taken off for Venezuela carrying urgent humanitarian assistance, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and said India stood ready to extend all possible help. The operation has been named “Amistad,” the Spanish word for friendship, underscoring the goodwill behind the mission.
The aid effort is aimed at strengthening rescue and rehabilitation operations in the hardest-hit areas, where collapsed buildings, damaged roads and overwhelmed hospitals have complicated relief work. Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, welcomed India’s support as a sign of close cooperation between the two countries. India’s move also highlights its growing role in international disaster relief, especially in large-scale humanitarian emergencies.
With casualties mounting and thousands affected, India’s Operation Amistad adds critical medical and logistical support to Venezuela’s disaster response. The mission reflects New Delhi’s broader commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief beyond its borders.
