India launches official campaign for UN Security Council 2028-29 seat

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-29 term, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiling the “SHANTI” bid in New York. The move is part of New Delhi’s push for a more representative global order and a bigger voice for the Global South.

The campaign was introduced at the UN headquarters as India made its case for election to the Security Council. The “SHANTI” theme reflects India’s emphasis on peace, trust, integrity, and multilateral cooperation. It also aligns with India’s long-standing argument that the UN system must better reflect current geopolitical realities.

India is expected to highlight its record as a peacekeeping contributor, a development partner, and an advocate of reform in global institutions. The campaign is likely to focus on India’s diplomatic credentials as well as its role in supporting stability, security, and international cooperation. The launch also signals the beginning of a wider outreach effort ahead of the vote.

India’s UNSC campaign is as much about influence as it is about representation, with SHANTI serving as the central message of its bid. By framing its candidature around peace and reform, India is positioning itself as a stronger stakeholder in global decision-making.
