India Launches E85 Fuel to Reduce Petrol Import Dependence

Shivani  Jaiswal, New Delhi-

India has taken a significant step toward strengthening energy security with the launch of E85 fuel, a blend containing up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol. The initiative is aimed at reducing the country's dependence on imported crude oil while promoting cleaner and more sustainable transportation.

Government officials said the move aligns with India's long-term strategy to increase the use of biofuels and support domestic ethanol production. By expanding the adoption of ethanol-blended fuels, policymakers hope to lower fuel import costs and improve the nation's energy self-reliance.

The introduction of E85 is also expected to benefit the agricultural sector, as ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane, maize, and other agricultural feedstocks. Increased demand for ethanol could create additional opportunities for farmers and strengthen rural economies.

Experts believe the fuel blend can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petrol, contributing to India's environmental and climate goals. However, the widespread use of E85 will require compatible flex-fuel vehicles and an expanded fuel distribution network.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as an important milestone in India's transition toward alternative energy sources. Automakers and fuel retailers are expected to play a key role in supporting the rollout of the new fuel across the country.

As India continues to diversify its energy mix, the launch of E85 represents another effort to balance economic growth, environmental sustainability, and energy independence. Authorities say the initiative could help reshape the country's fuel landscape in the years ahead.
