India, Japan sign pacts on AI, metals and energy after Modi-Takaichi talks

Swapna Kumbar, Bengaluru - India and Japan have signed a set of agreements to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence, metals and energy after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The two sides also prepared a broader roadmap on economic security, signalling that the summit was aimed at more than just routine diplomacy.

According to reports, the new pacts are designed to expand collaboration in AI research, industrial applications, digital public infrastructure, skills development and responsible governance of technology. The summit also placed emphasis on metals and critical minerals, which are increasingly important for electric vehicles, semiconductors and clean energy supply chains. That fits into a wider push by both governments to secure strategic inputs and reduce dependence on vulnerable supply routes.

Energy was another major theme, with the agreements expected to support cleaner fuel options, resilience in energy systems and joint work in areas linked to industrial growth. Reports also say the two countries agreed on their first joint defence co-development project, showing that the partnership is moving beyond trade into deeper strategic and industrial cooperation. The overall package reflects a strong effort to connect technology, materials and energy policy with long-term economic security.

The agreements mark a significant widening of the India-Japan partnership, especially in sectors that matter for future growth and security. By combining AI, metals and energy cooperation, both sides are building a more practical and future-focused strategic relationship.
