Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi - India and Cyprus officially upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership on Friday following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. The two nations launched a joint task force to boost cooperation in infrastructure and shipping, while signing several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) across digital infrastructure, fintech, research centres, and student exchange programmes. To facilitate the movement of professionals, progress was made on a comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement alongside a Social Security Agreement. Security ties were also fortified by establishing a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and increasing defence cooperation in cyber security and maritime awareness.
The economic roadmap focused heavily on doubling investments over the next five years, building on the momentum of Cypriot investments in India doubling over the last decade. Prime Minister Modi closely linked this growth to ongoing developments surrounding the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which he noted would unlock fresh opportunities for both countries. Concurrently, President Christodoulides expressed gratitude for India's long-standing support regarding the reunification of Cyprus, which is tied to their shared respect for territorial integrity. He also reiterated Cyprus's firm backing for India's rightful place in a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure global governance reflects modern realities.
Highlighting the deep, enduring nature of the bilateral bond during a joint press statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked on the strength of their democratic alignment. "The bond between India and Cyprus has repeatedly stood the test of time," Prime Minister Modi said. "Today, with the formation of the India-Cyprus Strategic Partnership, we are set to infuse our relations with new ambition and new momentum."
