Severe weather across the eastern Himalayas has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread disruption. In Nepal, over 40 individuals have perished due to heavy rains and flash floods since Friday. The eastern district of Illam was the hardest hit, with at least 37 fatalities attributed to landslides. Additionally, five people remain missing .

In India, the Darjeeling region of West Bengal has also suffered, with at least 17 confirmed deaths. The state experienced sudden rainfall exceeding 300 mm in just 12 hours, leading to the collapse of two iron bridges and extensive flooding in districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep concern and assured that all necessary assistance would be provided to the affected families .

Further north, nearly 1,000 people have been stranded on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest due to a blizzard that began on Friday evening and continued into Saturday. Rescue teams and local villagers are working to clear the snow and reopen blocked routes
