As Sholay marks its 50th anniversary, Hema Malini has shared memories of how she initially hesitated to take on the role of Basanti, the spirited tonga driver that became one of her most iconic characters.
Speaking at a commemorative event, the veteran actress revealed that she wasn’t keen on portraying a village girl who drives a tonga. “It felt unusual for me at the time, and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off,” she said. It was director Ramesh Sippy’s vision and persistence that eventually convinced her.
Hema recalled how Sippy explained the character’s charm, humour, and significance to the film’s story. “He assured me it would be remembered forever, and he was right,” she said, adding that Basanti remains one of her most loved roles.
Released in 1975, Sholay went on to become a landmark in Indian cinema, with its dialogues, characters, and songs etched into pop culture. Hema Malini said the film’s enduring popularity is a testament to the team’s passion and creativity, and she feels proud to have been part of it.
