Heated debate in Parliament on Women's reservation bill

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - On Thursday, 16 April the women's reservation bill was part of a debate at the table of Parliament. The ruling party leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi urge the bill to be passed. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed it up saying it to be "historical" step, meanwhile the opposing party criticised them by saying the central government is taking too long in implement the law. It also became a part of sharp political face-off where the opposition also alleged them to use the law an "unconstitutional" delimitation exercise.

This particular Act mandates a 33% of the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies seats to be reserved for women. It also applies the quota within seats reserved such as ST, SC aiming for full implementation ahead of the 2029 general elections. It applies uniformly across Lok Sabha and state assemblies without a fixed expiry, ensuring women candidates fill the reserved seats through rotation. No separate sub-quotas for SC, ST or OBC women are specified in the current framework.

Opposition parties, including Congress, have criticised the government for tying the women’s quota to a broader delimitation exercise that they fear could alter state-wise representation and favour BJP strongholds. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge termed it a “devious assault on democracy,” while leader Shashi Tharoor alleged it uses women’s empowerment as cover for redrawing constituencies. The BJP has hailed the bill as historic, with Modi warning that opponents “will not be spared by the women of this country.” The amendments are expected to clear the Lok Sabha with broad backing before moving to the Rajya Sabha.
