Factory workers at a manufacturing unit in Ganaur, Sonipat district, Haryana staged a visible protest this week after being issued boxes of the sweet Soan Papdi as their Diwali gift instead of the promised cash bonus. 
Clips circulating online show employees throwing unopened boxes of the sweet at the factory gates in frustration.  According to the video’s narration, the workers had been expecting a monetary bonus ahead of the festival of lights, but received the sweet instead.

The action has triggered debate on social media: some commentators felt the workforce was acting ungratefully, others argued that the employer failed to keep a clear promise.  The report notes that while soan papdi is a common festival gift in India, it has become associated with last-minute or low-effort presents, a reason it may have been rejected so vehemently.
