New Delhi, August 23 — Union Minister Anurag Thakur sparked conversations on mythology and science after telling schoolchildren that Lord Hanuman was the “first to go to space.” Speaking at an educational event, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader encouraged students to broaden their learning beyond classroom textbooks.
Thakur drew on the epic Ramayana, recounting Hanuman’s legendary leap across the ocean to Lanka in search of Sita. “If you look at it carefully, Hanuman Ji was the first to go to space. He could change his size, fly at great speed, and cross unimaginable distances,” he told the gathering.
He stressed that mythology often holds lessons in courage, determination, and imagination, which can inspire scientific curiosity. “Books are important, but knowledge is not confined to them. Students should explore stories, traditions, and experiences to gain wisdom,” Thakur said.
The minister’s remarks come at a time when discussions around blending cultural heritage with modern education have intensified. While many supporters appreciated his attempt to connect mythology with broader learning, critics argued that such statements risk confusing folklore with scientific achievements.
Education experts noted that linking traditional stories with science can be effective in sparking curiosity among young learners, but cautioned that clarity is necessary to prevent misconceptions.
Thakur concluded by urging students to focus on both academics and values, reminding them that “true knowledge comes from observation, imagination, and questioning.”
