Gujarat Water Crisis Deepens as Villagers Climb 45 Foot Wells for Survival

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - A worsening water crisis in rural Gujarat has pushed villagers into dangerous daily struggles, with residents reportedly climbing down 45 foot deep wells to collect water for basic household needs. Disturbing visuals from affected areas have drawn widespread attention, showing people risking their lives to access shrinking water reserves as intense heat and declining groundwater levels continue to impact several regions of the state.

Residents in drought hit villages say regular water supply has become increasingly unreliable, forcing families to depend on deep wells for drinking and domestic use. Men, women, and even elderly villagers have reportedly been descending into narrow wells using ropes and makeshift steps to fill buckets from the remaining water at the bottom. Locals claim the situation has worsened due to prolonged dry conditions, inadequate rainfall, and falling groundwater tables, leaving many communities with limited alternatives. The crisis has reignited concerns over water management, rural infrastructure, and climate related stress in arid parts of Gujarat. Villagers are demanding urgent intervention from authorities, including tanker supply, restoration of local water systems, and long-term conservation measures. Experts warn that recurring heatwaves and groundwater depletion could intensify similar crises across several Indian states if sustainable water management strategies are not strengthened.

The scenes emerging from Gujarat underline the harsh reality of water scarcity faced by many rural communities across India. As temperatures continue rising, pressure is mounting on authorities to deliver immediate relief while also addressing the deeper environmental and infrastructure challenges driving the crisis.
