Vipin Bhati, the prime accused in the horrifying dowry murder of his wife Nikki in Greater Noida, was shot in the leg on Sunday after he attempted to escape police custody. Vipin, accused of setting Nikki ablaze over dowry demands on Thursday night in Sirsa village, tried to flee and snatch a police officer's pistol during an evidence recovery operation near Sirsa Chauraha.
Despite his injuries, Vipin showed no remorse from his hospital bed. "I have no regrets. It's not my fault. She died on her own [apne aap mari hai]," he stated, adding that "husband and wife often have fights".
Nikki's sister, Kanchan, and her six-year-old son witnessed the brutal attack. Kanchan accused Vipin and his family of years of abuse and harassment, claiming Nikki was killed for a dowry demand of ₹36 lakhs. Nikki's father detailed previous demands for a Scorpio, a Bullet bike, and even a Mercedes. Nikki's son described, "They poured something on my mother, slapped her, and then set her on fire with a lighter". Nikki's father lauded the police action, seeking justice for all involved.
