India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has mandated the removal of the term "ORS" (Oral Rehydration Solution) from all food and beverage product labels. This directive applies to products where "ORS" appears alone, with any prefix or suffix, or as part of a trademark in the product name. The move aims to prevent misleading labeling that could confuse consumers into thinking these products are medically approved rehydration solutions.
Previously, the FSSAI had permitted the use of "ORS" on labels if accompanied by a disclaimer stating, "The product is NOT an ORS formula as recommended by WHO." However, the authority has now clarified that such usage violates the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and poses a risk of deceptive marketing.
The FSSAI has instructed all relevant authorities to enforce this ban strictly and take action against any violations under Sections 52 and 53 of the Act. This decision has been welcomed by healthcare professionals, including pediatricians, who have long raised concerns about the misuse of the "ORS" label on non-medical products.
