First female paratrooper from Assam in Indian Army

Major Dr. Dipanwita Kalita’s journey to becoming the first female paratrooper from Assam is a powerful tale of breaking barriers and defying odds. Born in the small town of Dhekiajuli in Assam, she was raised in a supportive family that valued education and perseverance.  Despite the challenges of growing up in a small town, she embraced her dreams with determination, setting the foundation for a remarkable career.

Dipanwita’s academic journey was marked by consistent excellence and leadership. After excelling at Devendra Green Grove English School, she graduated with distinction from Darrang College, determined to pursue her passion for medicine. Her decision to study MBBS in Manila, Philippines, made her the first girl from Sonitpur to study abroad. This bold step signified her willingness to leave her comfort zone and challenge the societal norms that often limit women’s opportunities. The courage to pursue her education abroad reflected the resilience and pioneering spirit that would define her future in the Indian Army. Little did she know that this decision would soon become a stepping stone towards breaking new frontiers in a traditionally male-dominated institution.

Her transition to the Indian Army as a medical officer in 2020 was just the beginning of her extraordinary journey. Driven by a sense of duty to serve her nation and the desire to make a tangible impact on soldiers’ lives, Dipanwita seamlessly shifted from civilian medicine to military service. But it was her relentless drive to push boundaries that led her to undertake one of the most physically demanding challenges in the military: airborne training. In 2023, she became the first woman from Assam to earn her paratrooper badge, joining the ranks of the elite Parachute Medical Regiment. Her achievement was not only a personal triumph but a historic milestone for women in India’s defense forces, particularly in the Northeast. As a Major in the Parachute Medical Regiment, she combines her medical expertise with the rigorous demands of airborne operations, proving that women can thrive in the most challenging environments.
