Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and provoking communal disharmony. Filed by local advocate Rinki Chatterjee Singh, the complaint cites controversial statements made by Banerjee targeting Hindutva and the Hindu community. The police have initiated an official investigation under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including criminal intimidation and intentional insult to provoke a breach of peace.
The first incident highlighted in the complaint dates back to an Eid-ul-Fitr programme held at Kolkata's Red Road in 2025, where Banerjee allegedly referred to the version of Hinduism espoused by her political opponents as a "filthy religion" (Ganda Dharm), deeply offending the beliefs of millions of followers. Furthermore, Singh cited a separate provocative remark made ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, where the former Chief Minister allegedly suggested that a particular community could severely impact Hindus during a protest speech. The advocate noted that she resorted to the Cyber Crime cell after local Pradhan Nagar police initially mistreated her and refused to register her written grievance.
The legal development has sparked intense political debate across West Bengal, especially coming on the heels of the recent assembly polls. While the ruling party faces criticism over the allegations, the Trinamool Congress leadership has yet to issue an official reaction regarding the FIR. However, local party representatives have acknowledged that the statements caused internal discomfort even during their time in power, stating that citizens hold the moral right to seek legal recourse.
