Film producers’ body warns influencers against negative reviews, hints at legal action

Mumbai – The Indian Film & Television Producers Council (IFTPC) has issued a strong warning to social media influencers, alleging that some creators are misusing their platforms to post deliberately negative reviews of new films in exchange for money or favors.

In a statement, the producers’ body said such practices amount to “extortion” and can damage a film’s reputation and commercial prospects. The council claimed that several recent releases have been targeted by online campaigns aimed at discouraging audiences and creating “sabotage” around titles.

IFTPC members emphasized that while constructive criticism and honest reviews are welcome, malicious reviews designed to pressure producers or production houses will not be tolerated. The council said it is prepared to pursue legal action against individuals or groups found guilty of defaming films or spreading misinformation online.

The issue has gained prominence with the rapid rise of social media platforms where short video reviews, reaction clips and trending hashtags often influence public perception of a film within hours of release. Producers argue that such platforms, while valuable, are increasingly being misused for personal gain at the cost of the film industry.

Industry insiders believe this move could trigger a larger debate on freedom of expression versus accountability in digital spaces. The council has called for clear boundaries that distinguish genuine critique from online smear campaigns, stressing that filmmakers should be protected from unfair digital harassment.
