A leading nutritionist has cautioned that consuming too much sugar during pregnancy can negatively affect both the mother and the baby. She explained that high sugar intake increases the risk of gestational diabetes, excessive weight gain, and complications during delivery.
For the baby, excessive sugar consumption may lead to a higher risk of obesity and metabolic issues later in life. The expert emphasized that moderation and mindful eating are essential for a healthy pregnancy.
As alternatives, the nutritionist recommended natural sources of sweetness such as fruits, dates, jaggery in limited amounts, and honey. She also suggested including whole grains, nuts, and seeds in the diet to maintain energy levels without relying on processed sugary foods.
She added that pregnant women should consult healthcare professionals to design a balanced meal plan that ensures proper nutrition for both mother and child. The key, she said, is choosing fresh, wholesome foods and avoiding refined sugar whenever possible.
