Shivani Jaiswal , New delhi- Dowry-related violence continues to claim the lives of thousands of women in India, despite strict laws and years of public awareness campaigns. The latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals that 5,737 dowry death cases were registered across the country in 2024. The numbers indicate that, on average, nearly 16 women die every day due to harassment and abuse linked to dowry demands.
The report has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of married women and the deep-rooted social practices that continue to exist in many parts of the country. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of cases, while several urban regions also reported incidents of cruelty and suspicious deaths connected to dowry disputes.
Social activists say that many families still treat marriage as a financial transaction, placing immense pressure on women and their families. In several cases, victims face mental and physical torture after marriage when demands for cash, vehicles, or expensive gifts are not fulfilled. Experts believe that fear, social stigma, and delayed legal action often stop women from reporting abuse at an early stage.
Women’s rights organisations have demanded stricter implementation of laws, faster court proceedings, and stronger protection systems for victims. They also stress the need for social change through education and awareness at the community level.
The NCRB figures highlight that dowry is not only an outdated tradition but also a serious issue affecting women’s dignity, security, and right to live safely in society.
