Desk Correspondent , Tamil Nadu - Tamil Nadu Assembly election results have taken a dramatic turn as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, surged ahead to become the single-largest party in early trends. The counting of votes, which began at 8 am under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, has placed TVK in a commanding position in its debut electoral battle.
According to trends available around 2 pm, TVK is leading in approximately 123 seats—comfortably crossing the majority mark of 118 required to form the government in the 234-member Assembly. This marks a significant political breakthrough for Vijay, whose entry into politics has reshaped the state’s electoral landscape. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Congress alliance, led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, is trailing behind with leads in around 47 seats, raising doubts over its bid to retain power. Meanwhile, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-BJP alliance is in second position with around 53 seats. The contest has been one of the most closely watched in recent years, with TVK’s strong debut disrupting the traditional dominance of Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. Early leads also show high-profile candidates, including Vijay himself, performing strongly in their respective constituencies. The elections were conducted in a single phase on April 23, witnessing a record voter turnout of 84.69%. Over 5.7 crore voters participated across more than 75,000 polling stations. Tight security arrangements, including a three-tier system, were put in place to ensure smooth counting across 62 centres.
With counting still underway, TVK’s impressive lead signals a potential political shift in Tamil Nadu. If trends hold, Vijay could be set to script history with a landmark victory in his very first electoral outing, redefining the state’s political dynamics and ending the long-standing dominance of established parties.
