Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remark that the "erection of the Babri Masjid was a fundamental act of desecration, speaking to the media in Mumbai on Thursday, he clarified that his words had been taken out of context, leading to a misrepresentation of his views on the Ayodhya dispute.
Chandrachud explained that excerpts from his interview were selectively quoted on social media, removing the context and distorting his intended message. He emphasized that the Supreme Court's Ayodhya judgment was based on evidence and legal principles, not faith. The judgment, he noted, was the result of exhaustive scrutiny of evidence, with the case record spanning over 30,000 pages. He expressed concern about how judicial independence is increasingly viewed through a binary lens on social media, with judges being labeled either pro-government or anti-government based on their decisions.
Chandrachud's clarification aims to address the misunderstandings arising from the misinterpretation of his remarks and to reaffirm the basis of the Supreme Court's decision in the Ayodhya case.
