Durga Puja Preparations Disrupted as Kolkata Battles Waterlogging, Pandals Face Damage

Torrential overnight rains have left large parts of Kolkata waterlogged, dealing a blow to the final preparations ahead of Durga Puja. Organizers of pandals (temporary worship structures) are scrambling to repair damage sustained by their artwork and settings due to the deluge.

Despite efforts to pump out water from low-lying zones, many areas remain inundated with knee-deep water. Locations such as MG Road, Jodhpur Park, Ballygunge, and Rabindra Sadan are still struggling with flooding, severely hampering pedestrian movement and local traffic.  Electricity supply in several neighborhoods has been cut as a precaution, with CESC citing proximity of rising waters to junction boxes and meters.

The Forum for Durgotsab, representing nearly 500 pujas across Kolkata and Howrah, warned that the rains have inflicted significant damage on the intricate artistry of many pandals, particularly those crafted from plywood. One pandal belonging to the Jayshree Dum Dum club already experienced partial structural damage.  Organizers lamented the setback, saying the timing couldn’t have been worse — final touches were underway just before the festival onset.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim acknowledged shortcomings in drainage in certain areas, including near Birla Planetarium, where water from a nearby lake has spilled onto adjacent roads. He defended the municipality’s efforts, stating that pumping stations are operational, and expressed hope that if no further rain arrives, the festivities can still proceed with zeal.  Meanwhile, the opposition criticized the city’s infrastructure and drainage planning, accusing administration of civic failure in light of the severe flooding.
