Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi - Women residents of Delhi University's University Hostel for Women (UHW) staged a massive late-night sit-in protest on Thursday, alleging "forced evictions" and financial "extortion" by the hostel administration. Organized alongside the All India Students' Association (AISA), the demonstration began around 9:30 PM and stretched past midnight, forcing students onto the campus streets during critical semester and NEET examination preparations.
According to a statement released by AISA, the administration allegedly cut off the water supply to sections of two hostel blocks and removed chairs from the reading room to disrupt academic preparations. The student body further claimed that the Provost initiated a forced eviction drive despite residents having already paid their hostel fees in advance for June and July. Furthermore, students alleged that the Provost backtracked on a previous verbal promise to extend the residency deadline, instead issuing a punitive order demanding an additional ₹450 per day for extended stays.
The protesting students and AISA have demanded the immediate resignation of the UHW Provost, the unconditional restoration of 24/7 water supply, and an extension of the hostel stay without any financial penalties. Condemning the administration's actions, AISA stated: "AISA stands unyieldingly with the resisting residents and demands the immediate resignation of the UHW Provost, a concrete written guarantee for the restoration of 24/7 water supply, and an unconditional extension of the hostel stay without any financial penalties!"
