Health experts have cautioned against the rising trend of using weight-loss injections such as Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide as quick solutions to obesity. While these drugs, classified as GLP-1 receptor agonists, can lead to a 15–20% reduction in body weight, doctors emphasize they are not substitutes for lifestyle changes.
Medical practitioners say the drugs were originally developed for diabetes management but are now being misused by individuals seeking rapid weight reduction. Unsupervised or prolonged use, they warn, may cause nausea, gallstones, pancreatitis, and even paralysis of the digestive tract.
With costs ranging between ₹15,000–20,000 per month, experts also point out that affordability is a major concern, as the injections are out of reach for most people. Additionally, there is no guarantee that weight loss will be sustained after stopping treatment.
Doctors recommend these injections only under strict medical supervision and as part of a broader health plan that includes diet and exercise. “There is no magic shot for weight management,” one senior endocrinologist noted, adding that lifestyle adjustments remain the cornerstone of long-term health.
