Desk Correspondent , Kolkata – West Bengal police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close aide to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, after tracking a digital footprint left at a toll plaza. The investigation gained a major breakthrough when authorities identified a silver car captured on CCTV footage, which led them to a specific UPI transaction made by the occupants. This electronic evidence allowed investigators to trace the suspects’ identities and movements, resulting in their apprehension just days after the crime was reported.
The breakthrough occurred at a toll booth where the suspects, traveling in a silver vehicle, opted to pay the transit fee using a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform rather than cash. By coordinating with the bank and the service provider, the police extracted the account details linked to the transaction. This data, combined with high-resolution CCTV images of the vehicle’s license plate and the individuals inside, provided a clear roadmap for the raiding teams to locate the fugitives in their hideout.
Chandranath Rath, a prominent political activist, was found dead under mysterious circumstances, sparking a high-profile investigation due to his professional ties to the Leader of the Opposition. While the motive behind the killing is still being scrutinized, officials confirmed that the three individuals are currently in custody for interrogation. The use of digital forensics in this case highlights the increasing role of electronic payment systems in solving complex criminal investigations where traditional physical evidence may be scarce.
