Ranit Kr. Singh , Shimla — A 60-year-old local resident was killed on June 1 on Naggar Road near Manali after an allegedly drunk tourist from Delhi drove on the wrong side of the road, dragged him for 25 feet, and reversed to run him over again. The driver, 29-year-old Vikrant Vij of Karol Bagh, was intercepted by local residents while attempting to flee and handed over to the police. Kullu Superintendent of Police Madan Lal Kaushal confirmed that Vij has been arrested, his Maruti Swift impounded, and two other occupants detained for questioning.
The victim, identified as Ram Krishan, died on the spot. According to eyewitness Om Prakash, the speeding vehicle was playing loud music while its three occupants consumed alcohol before veering into the wrong side of the road. Following the horrific incident, police registered a case at the Patlikuhl police station under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, alongside Section 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Sub-inspector Inder Singh is leading the ongoing investigation.
This fatal incident marks the second violent altercation involving tourists in the Kullu district within days, following a May 30 incident where a Punjab visitor shot a local taxi driver over a parking dispute in Kasol. The consecutive events have sparked outrage among residents, who are now demanding permanent security checkposts to monitor unruly and armed tourists entering the region. Meanwhile, Ram Krishan’s body has been handed over to his family for last rites following a post-mortem examination.
