Delhi authorities have announced an ambitious plan to microchip around 10 lakh stray dogs across the city over the next two years. The initiative, aimed at better monitoring and managing the stray dog population, was highlighted by Delhi minister Kapil Mishra.
Microchipping will allow authorities to track the animals, ensure their health, and reduce incidents of dog bites in public areas. Each dog will receive a small, safe chip that contains identification details, helping animal welfare teams maintain accurate records.
Kapil Mishra emphasized that the project is part of a larger effort to improve urban safety while also promoting the welfare of stray animals. He noted that the initiative will involve collaboration between municipal bodies, animal welfare organizations, and veterinary experts.
The plan has received support from several animal rights groups, who see it as a humane and systematic way to manage the city’s large stray dog population. Experts believe that microchipping, combined with sterilization drives, can significantly improve both public safety and the well-being of the animals.
The two-year program is expected to begin in phases, targeting areas with the highest concentration of stray dogs first, before expanding citywide.
