Desk Correspondent , Delhi - Residents of Delhi are facing intense “peak summer” conditions as temperatures continue to soar across the national capital. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions, warning people to avoid prolonged exposure to the scorching heat.
According to IMD’s weekly forecast, Delhi is expected to record a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Heatwave conditions are likely to persist across Delhi-NCR till May 22, with mainly clear skies and strong surface winds adding to the discomfort. Weather experts say the sharp rise in temperature is due to the absence of active western disturbances and cyclonic circulations. Skymet Weather vice president Mahesh Palawat said dry and hot winds from the west and northwest are intensifying the heat, with no major relief expected in the coming days.
The national capital on Monday witnessed the hottest day of the season so far, with the maximum temperature touching 43.4 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, according to the India Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Air Quality Index stood at 189 in the ‘moderate’ category on Tuesday morning, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Authorities have advised people, especially infants, elderly citizens and those with chronic illnesses, to avoid direct heat exposure, wear loose cotton clothes, stay hydrated and use umbrellas or head coverings while stepping outdoors.
With temperatures expected to stay above 40°C for the next few days, Delhiites are bracing for a harsh spell of summer as authorities urge residents to remain cautious amid worsening heatwave conditions.
